A typical day in the life of the average American family does not include incessant hunger. Most are able to provide at least three meals a day or more. With all of the extra snacks and junk food we buy, it’s very easy to forget that not every family has enough to eat.
Around the world, there are millions of people who are starving. Even in our own community we have neighbors, relatives, and friends who are unable to eat on a daily basis, people who have fallen on hard times, who lost their job, who are unable to work because of medical reasons. This is why Our Community Food Pantry is looking to help.
September is Hunger Awareness Month and we are looking to Stomp Out hunger in Southwick, Granville and Tolland. Anybody can come help out. There are many volunteering opportunities for anyone who wishes to offer some assistance, whether you want to make a weekly commitment or help with special projects. If you can’t spare the time, that’s no problem. We always need donations of food and money; even your spare pocket change will make a difference!
Being in high school, we never really thought about hunger in our community. Then, our NHS chapter began to form a relationship with the food pantry, and we discovered that hunger was a much bigger challenge than we thought. We felt awful that we had been overlooking a problem which exists so close to home. We wanted to help, and making people aware of the difficulties faced by families in our own community is the first step. NHS students have volunteered their time and are currently organizing donation drives in Woodland, Powder Mill, the High School, and the Granville School during the open houses. We've also begun to spread awareness by getting people to connect with the Food Pantry on Facebook. Our goal is 1,000 likes by September 30th.
Volunteering does not have to be an individual thing. Groups of friends can come help out. You and your friends can pool your resources and make larger donations. Did you know that $1.00 in donations can buy 7 meals, $10.00 can buy 50 pounds of food, and $100.00 can feed a family of four for a month? There are hundreds of families throughout Southwick, Granville, and Tolland who are going hungry right now. With your help, we can change that. So pitch in however you can! Send your child to school with a donation, or bring something to your child’s Open House. Spread the word to your friends and family, or like us on facebook! Anything you do can help, whether you’re an adult, or a kid!
